ODNR GIS Program

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a term used by ODNR to describe a collection of related technologies used to manage spatial data. These technologies include computer-aided design systems, automated and desktop mapping systems, remote sensing and image analysis systems, and their related database management systems. The goal of the program is to provide natural resource information to the public in a more efficient and effective manner.

The Department of Natural Resources GIS web pages contains information related to digital geographic data and the GIS Program. The site is divided into the following four sections:

  • Data Search & Metadata - This section allows the user to browse the DNR metadata system. Users can search the digital data directory, generate metadata reports and download selected data. Where data cannot be directly downloaded, the metadata report gives transfer instructions and contacts for alternative ways to acquire the data.
  • ODNR GIS Standards and Guidelines - This section is an online version of the ODNR GIS Standards and Guidelines publication. The DNR publication describes the Department’s GIS program, and includes chapters on DNR’s GIS strategy, GIS policy, data documentation (metadata), and guidelines on software, hardware, cartography and map design, and reference information related to GIS.
  • Division and Office Contacts - This section provides GIS contacts within the various divisions and offices of the Department of Natural Resources. Since not all of the digital geographic information within the Department has been added to the DNR metadata system, these contacts and links may provide an additional source of desired data.
  • GIS FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) - This section contains answers to questions most frequently asked about DNR’s Geographic Information System, the metadata system and using this site.

For a more complete discussion of GIS at ODNR, select the ODNR GIS Documents button and view either GIS Standards & Guidelines or DNR GIS History & Applications. The History & Applications requires Microsoft Powerpoint or Powerpoint Viewer, which can be downloaded here. If you have questions or comments about the Department’s GIS Program or this web site, please contact the DNR GIS Coordinator.
